PTSD & TRAUMA HEALING STEP 4

Find the resources you need to keep the healing process going.

Sadly, therapy is expensive and time-consuming. Thank goodness there is insurance to help cover it. But deductibles and co-pays can be overwhelming. Also needed are gas, rides, etc. Often we can find help at faith-based organizations, community outreaches, and other places.

We must also find time to focus on ourselves. Time is needed to feel feelings, process learning from sessions, etc. I often hear how selfish the healing process is. My response is that it is a time to focus on ourselves. We often have not had time to find out who we are. Sometimes if we take the time, other people keep telling us we are selfish and need to care for them! It is not selfish. It is a time to heal and make a difference in the world.

When traumatized, we had to survive, take care of others, people, please hide, pretend, keep going, recover from violence, etc. To heal, we must pull away and focus on ourselves. It may be the first time we have ever done this, and it feels selfish. It is not. Talk about it in your session. It is important.

  1. Who told you, you were selfish? What do they want from you?
  2. What other resources do you need to keep going in your healing process?
  3. Explore community resources such as counsel on aging, department for the family in government, religious organizations, neighbors, etc. Find what you need to keep going. Your mind, body, and spiritual health are at stake.

I am Dr. Donna LaMar, PhD psychologist, and I invite you to heal and gain freedom and wisdom.
