PTSD & TRAUMA HEALING STEP 3
Use healthy techniques that do not re-victimize you.
In my profession, there are many techniques, approaches, theories, models, etc. They are not all safe. In the previous post, I encouraged you to check out therapists carefully. The same goes for techniques and methods used in sessions, groups, healing weekends, workshops, etc.
One client shared a weekend she attended for sexually abused clients where the leaders of the weekend decided for clients to heal, they had to get comfortable with their bodies. According to the leaders, the clients had to be nude at the conference. This is never okay and re-traumatizes. Check them out, please.
Here is what to ask a counselor:
- What do they do in sessions, groups, and workshops? Ask specific questions. I appreciate being asked. That makes us a team helping you.
- What techniques do they use? And are they trained in the method?
- Does the client have control in the session and can stop the process anytime if it becomes uncomfortable?
- Can the client ask questions at any time?
- Will the therapist go at the client’s pace? Or do they push or not encourage?
Psychotherapy must be safe. Painful feelings will surface, and safety is vital to the work. We must be safe to do the feeling work needed to heal. It is a team effort!
- If you are in therapy, do you feel you are on a team with the therapist? Why or why not?
- Have you ever experienced a technique that was not okay? Describe it and feel the feelings connected to it.
- Did a therapist ever abuse you? Seek help and report it.
