The Trauma Of Rejection, Definition

So, what is rejection? The best definition I have heard was from a teen who was in the group for at-risk adolescents who said: “It is something that should have never happened.” Right on.

When I worked to define for my book called The Trauma Of Rejection, coming out in January, I struggled. I researched and found it is such a deep pain and loss for us. It has no adequate words. If you have some, please share them with us. Here are some I decided came close.

  1. Rejection is a primal feeling connected to our literal physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual survival.
  2. Rejection shakes our soul to its very roots. Our soul is beaten and bloodied when rejected. Our spiritual core strength is crushed. It often causes the destruction of our special divine purpose. Our hearts break into a million pieces, aching with sorrow and exhaustion.
  3. Rejection is a dismissal, negation, annulment, or cancellation of a person by being isolated and targeted. When rejected, we become lost, condemned, dismayed, desperate, anxious, and depressed and believe, no, we know there is no hope.
  4. Rejection causes the destruction and crushing of our soul, i.e., spirit.

It is, I believe, the deepest core pain we have ever experienced in our lives. It judges and condemns, causing a slow internal death and destruction of the precious, unique person God created. We feel abandoned, betrayed, and lost to ourselves, others, and our world. This slow death often stops growth, creativity, joy, love, and all aspects of us because our energy focuses on survival. We beg anyone, including God – please don’t make this real!

  1. When have you been rejected?
  2. Journal about your experiences.
  3. Feel your feelings about your experiences.
  4. Then write about them.
